Brookside Gardens is Montgomery County’s premier horticultural display garden located in the heart of Wheaton, MD. The Gardens were established in 1969 by the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission as a public garden featuring plants suitable for the region. The Gardens encompasses 54 acres with 32 acres of cultivated gardens consisting of several distinct areas including the aquatic gardens, azalea garden, rose garden, butterfly garden, children's garden, formal gardens, fragrance garden, Japanese style garden, trial garden, and rain garden. Two conservatories offer year-round enjoyment with changing seasonal displays. Admission to the Gardens is free and the gardens are open every day of the year sunrise to sunset. The Visitors Center offers educational programming for adults, and children, a horticultural reference library, a gift shop, Master Gardener Plant Clinics on the weekends, and rental facilities for private and corporate events. In addition to the various programs offered for children and adults, Brookside features many special events such as the Earth Day celebration to be held on April 17, the Wings of Fancy Live Butterfly Exhibit from April 30 through September 18, Children’s Day, a free annual event held on the third Saturday in September, and the Garden of Lights a walk-through light show during the from November 25 through January 8 featuring close to one million colored lights shaped in imaginative displays. Built in the 1920s, the Manor was the former country estate of Carolyn Gangwer Caughey. With seven indoor event spaces and overnight lodging for up to115 people, Rockwood Manor is ideal for destination weddings, wedding weekends, family reunions/special occasions, and other social events. Overnight accommodations include 10 hotel-style guestrooms with private bathrooms, a three bedroom family cottage, and three climate-controlled cabins.
