Trolley Museum Celebrates Black History Month: Special Exhibit—Jim Crow on Streetcars

The National Capital Trolley Museum celebrates Black History Month with a special exhibit, Jim Crow on Streetcars, telling the stories of both 19th and 20th century efforts to establish racially segregated transit and to resist its establishment. Washingtons street cars were not segregated, and provided African Americans some relief from the general rule in the City which imposed separate schools, accommodations, and communities and limited employment opportunities. That said, Capital Transit Company resisted hiring African Americans as streetcar and bus operators well into the 1960s. Come learn how discrimination in public transit was deliberately imposed, and slowly overcome.

Full trolley operations have resumed at the recently opened National Capital Trolley Museum's new and enlarged facilities in Northwest Branch Park near its previous location. Permanent displays, video presentations, a model of the Chevy Chase trolley line, Street Car Hall, a gift shop and unlimited trolley rides through the park await the visitor. Montgomery County Public Libraries Celebrates Black History Month 2012 Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) celebrates Black History Month in February with free programs highlighting traditional West African culture and dance. Anansegromma of Ghana, featuring native Ghanaians Kofi Dennis and Kwame Ansah-Brew, will present a program of traditional music, storytelling and dance. The group performs “call and response” songs, games and drum rhythms on authentic instruments giving the audience first-hand exploration of West African cultural traditions.
