The CVB talked with Trish Heffelfinger, Executive Director of the Maryland Soccer Foundation. Here's what she had to say about the ACC:
What is the estimated number of players, spectators expected at the November 9 and 11 games?
We expect Friday night to have between 5,000 - 6,000 spectators. There are four teams with 25 players each, 3 coaches, 6 referees and about 60 media and 30 staff.
How will this tournament bring economic impact to Montgomery County?
Three of the four teams will be from outside of Maryland; it is anticipated that at least 50% or more of the spectators will be outside of Montgomery County. They will stay in hotels, go shopping, eat in restaurants and enjoy all of the wonderful amenities in Montgomery County. The games will be televised on ESPN3 so it also brings national recognition to Montgomery County.
What preparation does the SoccerPlex go through to host these tournaments?
This event is unique. As the host, we are responsible for all operational and promotional aspects of the match. We market the event; we manage ticket sales and game day operations. It is a significant increase in work from other soccer tournaments, however it is the most prestigious and competitive collegiate soccer event in the country.
Has an ACC Tournament ever been held at the SoccerPlex?
The ACC Men’s soccer Championship was held at the SoccerPlex in 2006. Since then we have made substantial improvements to our stadium including a brand new bluegrass field! We now have all of the amenities of a professional stadium. The atmosphere is intimate and electric. Spectators are so close to the action on the field that you can hear the players talk to each other. The place will be hopping!
Who are you rooting for?
I am supposed to remain neutral and impartial. However, you better believe I’m with the Terps. My son Patrick is a senior at UMD so we are rooting for the hometown team!!
