Experience an 1863-era field hospital and Civil War encampment on the grounds of the Museum! Interact with living historians from the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Co. B., and the 20th Maine Camp and Hospital Association as they describe Civil War-era medical practices. Infantry from both the 28th Mass. and 20th Maine will be on hand to show uniforms and equipment of the period and perform live firing demonstrations. Inside the Museum, exhibits and demonstrations will feature anatomical, historical and archival collections related to the care of the wounded during the Civil War.

The Gaithersburg Book Festival is an annual celebration of great books and great writing that is one of the nations top literary events. The festival features best-selling and award-winning authors, as well as local authors, a Childrens Village, presentations by poets and singer/songwriters, announcement of the high school short story contest winners, exhibitors with literary wares and on-site sales of new and used books. Visitors of all ages also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of interactive, hands-on writing workshops.

What is scat? Explore and develop your skills in this most personal and creative of jazz singing styles! With Howard University Professor Connaitre Miller, explore the origins and techniques of scat, basic theory and the blues scale; then learn to hear chord changes in exercises for ear-training, develop a practical improvisation vocabulary and become an "active listener" familiar with the use of aural transcriptions. Some jazz singing experience recommended.

Enrollment: 3-6 Description: We will go over all the basics of Western papermaking, including how to prepare pulp in a Hollander beater, the different stages of beating cotton rag, pigmenting pulp, how to form sheets using a mould and deckle, and pressing and drying. Make as many sheets as we have time for. No papermaking experience required. Bring waterproof shoes/galoshes/or boots and expect to get wet.

Fabric is a fantastic medium to print onto and can be translated into a great range of applications. This hands-on introductory class will provide instruction of the silk screening process specifically for fabric. You will learn about sourcing printing equipment and materials, preparing your personal artwork for screen-printing, coating and exposing a screen, executing a screen print, heat setting a printed image, and fabric care. No previous experience of screen-printing necessary.

The Gandhi Memorial Center in cooperation with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Embassy of India presents a photographic exhibit by Sondeep Shankar depicting the Sikh Heritage of India. The Festival Chorus and Orchestra of the Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ will present Maurice Durufle's Requiem Op. 9 and Johann Sebastian Bach's Tocata BWV 4 "Christ Lag in Todesbanden" conducted by Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez and featuring soloists Lena Seikaly, contralto and George Singleton, baritone.
