Eight painters have been selected as finalists for the Bethesda Painting Awards, a juried competition and exhibition produced by the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District. More than 350 artists from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. submitted work to the ninth annual competition created to exclusively honor regional painters. The work of the eight finalists will be on display at Gallery B from June 1-29, 2013. A public opening will be held on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 6 – 9pm in conjunction with the Bethesda Art Walk. Gallery B is located at 7700 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite E in downtown Bethesda. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 12 – 6pm. Entries were juried by Tim Doud, Associate Professor of Art at American University; Duane Keiser, Acclaimed painter and art blogger and Christine Neill, Professor of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Students will also work on performance quality and style in preparation for a Showcase. Backpack Journalism is a form of broadcast journalism where the individual is the reporter, camera operator, and editor! These reporters are vital to getting the word out in Montgomery County! This program is open to 7th-12th grade students. Students will have four 4-hour classes teaching the basics of Backpack Journalism. Students will learn story composition, shooting and editing.

What's tougher than getting up in front of a large audience and delivering a powerful, moving "stem-winder" speech? Well, maybe writing the speech. In fact, very few writing assignments are tougher than speechwriting. It's a life of multiple drafts and trying to capture something that can be rather elusive called "voice." A speech is a story that builds a case and carries a message. Learn in a fun and interesting way about this very personal form of ghostwriting through concepts and techniques. Participants will get hands-on experience and everyone will write a complete speech by the time the workshop ends.
