Black Women in American Culture and History

Presented by The Lincoln Park Historical Foundation and Montgomery County Public Libraries

Saturday, February 25, 2012
02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

The Lincoln Park Historical Foundation will be joined by the Montgomery County Public Libraries and the Office of Human Rights in a conversation with local Black women who have been active in shaping the American dream. Each person will share their personal journey through education and history. The conversation will begin with Ms. Pearl Green who attended the Quince Orchard Colored School. In 1901the School burned down and in1902, an old school used for white students was moved to the current “Pleasant View Historic Site” which replaced the school that was built for colored students. Ms. Geraldine Payton-Brown, a student, who taught students in Montgomery County segregated schools due to the lack of substitute teachers in Rockville, the Hub of Black Education; and Rev. Dr. Ruby Reese Moone, who was a high school Guidance Counselor for Poolesville Junior and Senior High School, Montgomery County Public Schools, which became integrated after the landmark decision of Brown v Board of Education in Topeka, Kansas. Black students and teachers had to walk through the doors of uncertainty however; Montgomery County Maryland provided police protection for the first three months. We will also be joined by Dr. Judith Docca, Board of Education Member, District 1 and Anita Neal Powell, author of "African American Heritage: A Journey Through History." Immediately following the conversation at the library we will be heading over to the Pleasant View Historic Site, 11810 Darnestown Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20878 for a guided tour by students and others who attended the Quince Orchard Colored School in Gaithersburg.
